With many cultural remnants of its heavy German settlement, the state of Wisconsin is located in the Great Lake Region bordered by Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. With its location between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River, the state is home to a wide variety of geographical features. Over 45% of Wisconsin’s land area is covered by forest. Snow covers the ground in practically all the winter months and many of the streams and lakes are ice-covered.

Economic growth has been concentrated more in the southeast due to the fact that soils and climate are more favorable for agriculture. Although farming remains important, especially Dairy Farming, manufacturing is the mainstay of today’s economy with special focus on transportation and capital equipment.
